Status Messages Overview

Change from SMS 1.2  SMS 2.0 replaces SMS events in 1.2 with status messages.

SMS status messages report information about SMS component behavior and data flow. SMS status messages are categorized by severity and type.

You can create status filter rules at each site. You can have as many filter rules as you want, each with a different set of matching criteria, such as the source of the status message, its severity, and its type. In each filter rule, you can specify actions to be taken when a message matches the filter rule criteria, such as reporting it to the Windows NT Event log, replicating it to the parent site, or running a program.

When working with status messages, you can:

• Configure which priorities and levels of status messages you want to be reported and where you want them written to.
• View and delete status messages logged to an SMS site database (including messages for any subsites) by using Status Message Viewer.
• Use Windows NT Event Viewer to view status messages logged to the Windows NT Event Log (for more information about viewing items in the Windows NT Event Log, see your Windows NT product documentation).
